A jury rendered a guilty verdict Friday for Max Townsend, the man accused of hitting a group of cross country runners, killing three, in February 2020 outside Moore High School.Townsend was found guilty on three counts of second-degree murder, three counts of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in a fatality and four counts of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injury. It s the verdict the families of those cross country runners hoped for after grieving the loss of Yuridia Martinez, Rachel Freeman and Kolby Crum for more than a year. I just feel a huge weight lifted off my shoulders, Crum s mother, Tansey Hellbusch, said. I m still sad. I still don t have my son. But this is such a relief that we can close this chapter. The jury recommended Townsend spend life in prison. A formal sentencing will be held in August.
