UCM emeriti member Walt Hicklin on March 22 became the first recipient of this new service award that has been established in his name.
Smith-Cotton High School senior Abby Bruce, the student director for Community Cafe, accepts a donation of $1,000 from the kitchen staff and administrators at Smith-Cotton Junior High, as well as members of the Sedalia 200 district s food service staff.
The junior high kitchen staff made Valentine s Day cookies that were purchased by junior high staff members and students; all proceeds went to the cafe, which provides an evening meal free of charge five nights a week for those in need.
Bruce said the donation is quite meaningful and shows that even in hard times like these, we can still make sure people can get a meal.

With the coronavirus affecting so much of what we can and can t do, can you imagine struggling to put food on the table? The Sedalia Community Cafe works to make sure struggling local citizens don t have to worry about getting a nice meal at the end of the day.
The Cafe is open Monday through Friday and serves dinner from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Open Door North Venue, 417 West Pettis. In order to continue serving the disabled, elderly, and homeless, we need your help. We serve between 45 and 50 people a night and are in need of support from our community. We are a Smith Cotton student driven organization that was started in 2006 by Smith Cotton alumni, Kristen Allcorn.
