Vineland BOE surprises retiring superintendent with farewell tribute

View Comments VINELAND – Superintendent Mary Gruccio, greeted by a standing ovation, didn’t realize a tribute was on Tuesday’s school board agenda. Retiring this month after a career spanning 46 years, Gruccio was honored for her journey of service that started in a classroom and concludes with her holding the district’s top spot. Board members whisked Gruccio into an executive session” giving family and colleagues, past and present, time to slip into the Landis auditorium for the surprise farewell. A 1971 Vineland High School graduate, Gruccio came back to the district after earning her degree. She settled into her first teaching job at Barse Elementary and made educating Vineland’s children her life’s work.

Llano said he was looking forward to connecting with Gruccio during the transition. His plan was to “do some school visits, get into classrooms and meet teachers, meet the kids and meet the community.” “I look forward to being very engaged and hands-on,” he said, planning to hit the ground running on July 1. Llano was one of 31 applicants for the post and rose to the top after three rounds of interviews. “We are very excited about Mr. Llanos’ experience, his passion for the students, and his enthusiasm and desire to come to Vineland,” said board member Kim Codiposti, who chaired the superintendent search committee.

Hundreds of NJ schools stay remote as COVID spread creeps in 2021

More and more schools keep pushing back their return to classrooms as districts continue to deal with the pandemic. Just 77 school districts across the state were offering full in-person instruction as of Jan. 4, while another 339 districts have started 2021 in an all-remote model with no immediate change in sight. In Middlesex County, Woodbridge  public schools announced they are all-remote until March 1. At that point, students will return to a hybrid model, which provides two days of in-person instruction per week, based on a cohort system. “This is based on the diminished classroom capacity while keeping students 6 feet apart. The rooms that used to hold 25-30 students can now only hold 10-12,” Woodbridge schools Superintendent Robert Zega said in a written response to New Jersey 101.5.
