Here at San Jose City hall. You have mayoral candidate dave cortese, whos a santa clara supervisor, has the backing of the police union. You can see him here casting his vote this morning. Hes going up against sam liccardo, a San Jose City councilman, who has the support of mayor chuck reed. What separates the two most is where they stand on measure b. Liccardo supported the law to cut pensions for Police Officers and other City Employees in order to trim the budget deficit. As a result, there is now bad blood between the rank and file Police Officers and the mayor and parts of the city council. Cortese is painting himself as the mayor who can mend those relations and help rebuild the department. In recent years, hundreds of officers have been let go in a costcutting measure leading to lower morale and an uptick in crime.
