Down. Evergreen Unified School District sees the closings as a necessity. I do, along with many of my colleagues, support School Consolidation because its the fiscally responsible thing to do. The closing will affect 700 students, the district says the schools were chosen given enrollment trends, cost to operate and maintain and neighboring schools that can take students in. Other alternatives could have been cutting class sizes, layoffs across the district. Spokeswoman says the closures will impact the least number of students overall. The district saving 450,000 a year. Thats the cost to operate a school as it faces a 12 million shortfall. The decision to close schools is not an easy one.
