Down. Evergreen Unified School District sees the closings as a necessity. I do, along with many of my colleagues, support School Consolidation because its the fiscally responsible thing to do. The closing will affect 700 students, the district says the schools were chosen given enrollment trends, cost to operate and maintain and neighboring schools that can take students in. Other alternatives could have been cutting class sizes, layoffs across the district. Spokeswoman says the closures will impact the least number of students overall. The district saving 450,000 a year. Thats the cost to operate a school as it faces a 12 million shortfall. The decision to close schools is not an easy one. Many School Districts across the state of california are having to go through the same process because of declining enrollment. This is not an evergreen only problem. Megatrend consistent with other School Districts in the bay area, many families moving to lowercost areas, declining birth rates a factor, too. They looked at the maps and the districts future. When i was presented with the numbers, immediately i thought to myself wow, we dont have the numbers. They approved the closures. No parent wants to see their school close. This parents fiveyearold was supposed to attend laurelwood next year. It is with heavy hearts, but its probably for the better, now. The students will be moved to four neighboring schools, staff will be moved to other schools as well. The district is planning to close a third school at the end of the next school year. That school has not yet been identified. New tonight, ktvu has learned that Union City Police have made arrests nearly 3 months after two young boys were shot and killed. Police say they also seized drugs and guns in connection to the killing. 14yearold John Washington and 11yearold Kevin Hernandez were inside of an Insider School parking lot at 1 30 in the morning when two gunmen fired at that van. Police will release more information and photos of the suspects at a News Conference set for tomorrow morning. Oakland is moving toward a new policy for when police can use specialized equipment. Tonight the Police Commission talked about the force of becoming too militarized. They say currently theres no policy on when police can use tear gas and deploy Armored Vehicles like the bearcat critics argue that the bearcat is often used to intimidate, but Law Enforcement agencies as a nothing can shield them or save the public from gunfire any better. Still the Police Commission is pushing toward a resolution to require police to create a use policy on specialized equipment and report annually on how its used. It looked like an Occupying Army in the neighborhood. It is just overkill. Police data obtained by 2 investigates shows that oakland deploys their bearcat twice as much as San Francisco. A new effort is underway to limit the number of Homeless Navigation Centers in San Francisco where they can be built. This comes as neighbors learn of a death at the recently opened asunder in embarcadero. Reporter neighbor safe this new Navigation Center is attracting the mentally ill and drug users into the area. They say they would support a measure that would put limits on Navigation Centers. This controversial waterfront Navigation Center, along San Franciscos embarcadero has been up and running since december 30. Rings have deteriorated, we see piles of syringes on the street. Neighbor wallace lee said he just learned that someone died at this Navigation Center january 30. He showed us this Critical Incident report that reads there was a person in the restroom deceased. It goes on to say my First Response was to administer your cam as a precaution. There was no reaction. Lee says these are photos of the homeless encampments that have popped up in the neighborhood because of the Navigation Center. Some of the tents in the area were from people who were trying to get a spot in the center or people from within the center who sleep outside. Former San Francisco mayoral candidate Richie Greenberg is coauthor of a measure that would limit the number and location of Navigation Centers in the city. It would cap their lifespan to two years. We think putting one in every district is ridiculous, its not based on the need. Greenberg says Navigation Centers should be located where there are the largest number of homeless people. Advocates for housing say the homeless crisis is a citywide problem. I think its really ugly. I think its at best misguided, Everyone Needs to deal with it. If they are upset that its a problem, good, i hope that motivates them to do more. This meant tells me his drug use led to four years of homelessness. He says Navigation Centers should be located where services are nearby. It would make sense to keep it around the homeless area as is. If you put them in every neighborhood it will disperse the people throughout the city. Greenberg says his goal is to get the measure on the November Ballot to qualify he tells me he needs 8900 signatures by july 21. Amber lee in a San Francisco, thank you. He met the victim at the paddock bar in alameda january 12 of 2019. She was heavily intoxicated and he and a friend offered to drive her home. The next morning she woke up inside her car and realized she had been sexually assaulted. Authorities say dna on the clothing match that of the suspect. State audit seems that california Law Enforcement agencies are not following state privacy lot and policies when it comes to their license plate readers. The seven month long audit reviewed license plate data handling by marin and sacramento countys and police in fresno and los angeles. For marin, auditors said the data policy lacked key safeguards including details on who should have access to private data and how it will be properly destroyed. The marin sheriffs to Department Notes that the audit did not find any evidence of misuse of the data and says it will consider the states recommendations.
