Maddox informed the City Council on Tuesday that he was taking a similar approach to city operations.
Each department, he said, deals differently with the public. If a department head believes workers or visitors aren’t in danger of contracting or spreading the novel coronavirus, masks won’t be required.
But if a department head opts to require them, then masks will be provided for anyone who needs one.
“I just felt like the implementation of it would be smoother and cleaner at a department level,” the mayor said. “At this point, I believe in our team members.”
While no one voted against rescinding the executive powers granted to Maddox last year, the only council member to publicly question his mask decision was Councilor Sonya McKinstry, who expressed concerns about confusing the public about what is expected.
