Rains in Jammu and Kashmir bring relief after hottest day of season

JAMMU: After witnessing the hottest day of the year so far on Sunday, Jammu and Kashmir received monsoon rains on Monday, bringing relief from temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius in the past few days.
On Sunday, the maximum temperatures in summer capital Srinagar and winter capital of Jammu were recorded at 35 degree Celsius and 36 degrees Celsius respectively- highest so far this summer.
“After the hottest day of the season so far, a blissful early morning shower in J&K. Expect more monsoon showers till 21st, very heavy at times. No flood expected but good chances of flash floods, water logging and landslides etc. No harm in staying alert,” said Sonam Lotus, director of the regional meteorological department.

JAMMU, June 30: Jammu, the winter capital of the Union Territory recorded its hottest day of the season today at 42.9 degree Celsius and the Meteorological Department (MeT) has warned that the temperature may rise further tomorrow and the only respite from the scorching heat is expected from July 2 to 5.The City of Temples recorded maximum temperature of 42.9 degree, which was 5.2 notches above season’s average. The minimum temperature of the City was also 2.4 notches above normal at 28 degrees Celsius. Earlier on June 9, the city had recorded day temperature of 42.7 degrees Celsius, three notches above normal.Most parts of Jammu and Kashmir have been reeling under scorching heat for the past couple of days with Srinagar recording a high of 33.8 degrees Celsius and a low of 16.6 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department announced on Monday that the monsoon season arrived in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh 17 to 18 days earlier than usual. The IMD has declared the arrival of monsoon over J&K and Ladakh on June 13 which is 17 to 18 days ahead of the normal onset, said Sonam Lotus, Director of the Met Department.
The Met Department has forecast scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rain and thundershowers in Jammu and Kashmir in the next 24 hours.
