With the restaurant’s windows boarded up and phone line disconnected, rumors began circulating over the weekend that Pompei’s Grotto and at least two other Fisherman’s Wharf restaurants were permanently closing. But manager Michael Carden told The Chronicle that Pompei’s isn’t going anywhere.
“Google search had us down as permanently closed and I fixed that,” he said. “I have no idea where they got that.”
Carden isn’t sure exactly when Pompei’s Grotto, located at 340 Jefferson St., will reopen, but he’s aiming for sometime in June. He said the owner didn’t want to reopen the restaurant until he was confident it wouldn’t have to close again because of the pandemic. Many other Fisherman’s Wharf restaurants are temporarily closed and taking a wait-and-see approach to reopening, Carden said.

The Doodler
During a tumultuous time in San Francisco more than 45 years ago, a serial killer called the Doodler sketched gay men in bars before stabbing them.
Plagued by a complicated investigation, a frightened public and sparse mainstream press coverage of LGBTQ murder victims, the case went cold and a killer walked free.
