The government decided on Monday to financially support independent artists, the self-employed and independent culture professionals, tasking the finance and culture ministries with setting aside an additional €3 million this year as direct support to the culture sector.
Speaking at a cabinet meeting, Culture Minister Nina Obuljen Koržinek said the support was envisaged for an activity that was not covered by the Croatian Employment Service’s coronavirus relief measures and that it would come from a special culture ministry fund.
Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said the decision sent the message that culture was important, including in times when the country is hit by a pandemic and earthquakes.

ZAGREB, 15 January (Hina) – Construction Minister Darko Horvat said on Thursday that around HRK 12 billion had been secured through the EU Solidarity Fund, World Bank loans and the state budget for the reconstruction of areas hit by last year’s earthquakes.
Speaking in an interview with the HTV public broadcaster, Horvat said that clear rules on how to organise reconstruction would be published in the Official Gazette within a month from the earthquake that hit Sisak-Moslavina County on 29 December.
He added that the government still did not have a complete financial framework for reconstruction but that so far HRK 12 billion (€1.6 billion) had been secured.

ZAGREB, 13 January (Hina) – The national COVID-19 crisis management team on Wednesday adopted new rules for crossing the state border to restrict non-mandatory arrivals in Croatia, especially from countries where a new strain of coronavirus is spreading, such as Great Britain and the South African Republic.
The list of those countries will be made by the Croatian Public Health Institute (HZJZ), and special epidemiological measures will apply to travellers from those countries, Davor Božinović, who is the head of the national COVID-19 crisis management team, told a press conference, adding that the decision is not related to citizenship but to the area from which a traveller is coming.

ZAGREB, 11 January (Hina) – Health Minister Vili Beroš said on Monday Croatia was recording good COVID-19 trends with fewer infections and hospitalisations.
Over the past 24 hours, Croatia has registered 230 new cases of the coronavirus infection, there have been 35 deaths, and the number of active cases is 4,976. There are 2,140 patients in hospitals, 191 of whom are on ventilators.
“The number of new infections and hospitalisations is smaller. The pressure on the healthcare system is gradually easing. The lower numbers point to the responsibility of Croatian citizens as well as to the full logic of our measures,” Beroš said at a press conference of the national COVID-19 crisis response team.
