Croatia thanks diaspora, international community for swift quake relief

Petrinja (Screenshot/Croatian Red Cross) ZAGREB, 2 January (Hina) – Foreign Minister Gordan Grlic Radman on Saturday thanked the international community and Croatian emigrants for swiftly sending relief to those affected by a 6.2 earthquake in Sisak-Moslavina County, saying the government would not forget anyone affected. Visiting the area struck on Tuesday, he told press in Lekenik the government was “pleasantly surprised” by the swift response of the international community and Croatian emigrants. The government immediately requested the activation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, and more than half the member states responded in 24 hours, ready to help, said Grlic Radman. Austria sent containers, Greece was the first to send a plane with 19 tonnes of relief, and Bulgaria and Poland have sent relief too, he said, adding that yesterday he spoke with colleagues from Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America.

Quake damages chimneys in 30% of buildings in Hrvatska Kostajnica

ZAGREB, 2 January (Hina) – The mayor of the town Hrvatska Kostajnica town, situated south of Petrinja and Sisak where the epicentre of the 29 December earthquake was, said on Friday that 30% of buildings in his town had damaged chimneys as a consequence of the devastating quake. Mayor Dalibor Biscan told the RTL broadcaster that the town needed mostly construction material to repair the roofs and chimneys of  buildings damaged by the earthquake so that residents could have heating in their homes. Biscan also warned about the danger of landslides in Sisak-Moslavina County, notably in the town of Hrvatska Kostajnica.  He said that 42% of the county was at potential risk of landslide and that this risk rose to 60% in Hrvatska Kostajnica. 

EC officials pledge further aid for Croatia after first phase of disaster relief operation

ZAGREB, Dec 30 (Hina) – European Commission officials have pledged further aid after the completion of the first phase of the rescue and disaster relief operation following a devastated earthquake that struck central Croatia on Tuesday. I am here to express the EU’s solidarity with the people of Petrinja, the people of Sisak-Moslavina County and the people of Croatia after this tragedy, European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic said during a visit to Petrinja, about 60 kilometres southeast of Zagreb, on Wednesday. He was accompanied by Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic, European Commission Vice-President Dubravka Suica, and Minister of Regional Development and EU Funds Natasa Tramisak.
