Locals and visitors can virtually attend World War II history programs with staffer Duane E. Shaffer of the Sanibel Public Library via Zoom. No in-person programs are scheduled. On March 17 at 10 a.m., he will present “1943 Operation Eiche (Oak).” Learn about the German paratroopers’ rescue of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini from the Apennine Mountains in southern Italy in 1943. Since the early 1980s March is designated as Women’s History Month, a time to recognize, celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields. Celebrate the month with your Sanibel Public Library card stop by the book display or borrow an eBook from home. The Sanibel-Captiva Art League and Shell Island Garden Club’s “Art in Bloom” exhibit floral arrangements inspired by and displayed with coordinating artwork will be on display on March 9-10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and March 11 from 9 a.m. to noon. Pieces will be located on the second level.
