Locals and visitors can attend U.S. Civil War history programs via Zoom with Duane Shaffer of the Sanibel Public Library. Shaffer will present “The Battle of Fort Myers” on May 28 at 10 a.m.
In February 1865, angry farmers, cattlemen and Confederate soldiers attacked the Union fort on the Caloosahatchee River. The defenders of the fort were a mix of Colored Regiment soldiers, Union sympathizers and men from the New York Volunteer Infantry. The battle in Fort Myers has the distinction of being the southern-most battle of the Civil War. More details and login instructions are available at www.sanlib.org.
