Below 400 feet of water lies the remnants of the town of chemical and a smelter. On the other side of the dam is corum and the corum smelter. That is where we are headed today. Of the things we dont talk about a lot is the copper industry and theres a lot could learn from it. My resources to finding tales that are not told in trying to get those out there. Now, we are standing outside the remnants of the corum shelter. It was probably the most significant copper town in Shasta County. Catholic, which is south of us, and a horseshoe shape up to commit and the town of english. Copper minesrious and smelters that operated in 1923. Rea from 1895 to copper was discovered in the 1860s in Shasta County but early experiments did not prove profitable. One minor and the send it sending his or her to wales. Being with my dad during those years when he was a game warden was like having a storybook childhood. I did things that most kids would dream of. When he started out, he was on what they call marine patrol and his duty was patrolling the channel the California Channel Islands which are fantastic. And theyre anywhere from like 26 miles across the sea like the song says or clear out way out in the ocean. So i got to go on these excursions or these patrols out into the out into the Channel Islands and see see things that mofmente kids would only dream of. There was one particular chapter i wrote about in the book. I called it a trip to the islands where we went out and we took these two National Park scientists from washington, d. C. Dam, the secondlargest concrete dam in the united states. It forever changed the state of california and beyond. The Central Valley of california runs right here from redding, california, 450 miles to bakersfield. It is about 50 miles wide and it is a big, flat valley. We have had very wet and dry years. We get aboutars, 75 of the states precipitation here, so all of that would wash into the valley and cause massive flooding. The native americans that lived here prior to us with live by the river and go to Higher Ground during flood seasons. Received, it would would deposit rich soil throughout the valley and decade after decade of this, you got a very thick layer of good soil and fairly flat because as water receipts, at levels that, so you have this big valley with wonderful soil, and long growing years, so the missing part was reliable water source and that is where shasta dam came into play.
