Reidsville s Breon Pass named male athlete of the year at HighSchoolOT Honors Tags: Updated July 22, 2021 8:19 p.m. EDT By Kyle Morton, HighSchoolOT producer Reidsville basketball and football star Breon Pass has been named as the male athlete of the year at HighSchoolOT Honors. Pass was a key contributor to Reidsville s three-time state champion football team as a wide receiver. On the basketball court, Pass helped establish Reidsville as a regular contender in 2A basketball, cementing himself as one of the state s top players and earning a scholarship to play at NC State. In 2020, Pass was nominated for the Stuart Scott Courage Award at HighSchoolOT Honors for the way he handled the passing of his father, also his head basketball coach, and continued on as a leader for the Ram programs.

This is Kristen. Today is an important day in North Carolina s civil rights history. 50 years ago, on April 20, 1971, Supreme Court justices ruled in Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education that the school board must create a busing plan that would desegregate the district. This ruling would go on to plant seeds of integration in other districts nationwide. Though progress has been made over the years, CMS still has a long way to go to reach equality. Despite Charlotte s diverse population, our neighborhoods and schools are distinctly segregated by race. Considering the entire boys basketball team was at the same time preparing for football season due to the unique circumstances brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s a wonder the Redhawks were able to place third in the Southern Carolina Conference and make the 3A basketball playoffs. In doing so, the Redhawks’ basketball season ended just three days before the first football game — with no opportunity to postpone. So obviously the Redhawks will need time to get up to speed in football. Monroe’s football team drew defending 3A state champion Charlotte Catholic in the opener and got blanked (27-0), and it put pressure on them to find a way in Week 2.
