the idea that all of a sudden the ethics committee is going to swoop in and solve the capitol hill sexual harassment problem is something that anybody who has spent time on capitol hill can tell you is honestly a kind of fansful notion. the way that capitol hill handles these types of allegations, as governor dean said, is essentially designed to protect members. look, if you re a woman and want to allege that your boss, a member of congress, sexually mistreated you, you have to it could take weeks. you could potentially have to go to mandatory mediation so that could mean you have to sit down with the person who you alleged attacked you. the idea that that is a way to protect victims is itself a real head scratcher. in addition, one of the woman who bought this forward with senator conyers, she had to sign
opinion piece in the washington post, capitol hill has a sexual harassment problem. kristin nicholson joins me. with a welcome you to, you and your coauthor also wrote a letter to senate and house leaders. tell us about that first. thanks for having me. we sent a letter signed by over 1,500 of our staffers to the leaders of the committees that have jurisdiction over these internal issues asking for some reforms to the current system for reporting problematic behavior and making sexual harassment claims and also asking for training on sexual harassment prevention to be mandatory for all staff and members. we re thrilled to see that at least one of those steps is being taken. we hope there s more reforms to come. the letter itself shows the significance of the problem and also the significance of the support out there among former staff to see some changes
9:00 p.m. eastern right here on msnbc and they talk about that topic and much more. let s bring in georgetown university. christen is a former congressional chief of staff. and has been leading the charge for congress to confront its sexual harassment problem. let s start with this first, what do you know of conversations what has been said by senator gillibrand in the past and why do you think she may have decided to now speak out in such force? well, i mean i think it s obvious that we ve reached a point in this country where a lot of us are grappling with behaviors that might have been excused or defended in the past, and we have reached a point where i think we are acknowledging that there has to be a more stereo tolerance policy going forward, at least that s where i hope that we get in the world of politics and capitol hill. so i think it s only natural for ta lot of people to be kind of rethinking some of these issues and some of these behaviors
