“Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.” Corporate changes are the name of the game. Atlanta’s Crescent Mortgage’s bank owner is aligning all mortgage facets of the enterprise and moving to “retail only” and eliminating third party. Rather than wind down, Colorado’s Universal Lending is inking an agreement with Lower LLC in a partnership setting up Universal Home Loans being in the same markets as a division of Lower LLC and improve its competitive position. Every discussion that I’ve had with real estate agents lately involves a) thousands of agents leaving the business due to the lack of… business, and b) how 8 percent mortgage rates have absolutely ground transactions, and even interest in looking at properties, to a halt. Meanwhile, I’m having similar conversations with loan originators as a) NMLS licenses are declining, and b) 8 percent mortgage rates have ground activity to a halt. From a broker-d

If I am not borrowing money, the impact of higher rates isn’t a big direct hit to my lifestyle or spending. But if I had a credit card from Kohl’s, paying 30 percent would sure dissuade me from buying something and putting it on “layaway.” Lowe’s? 28.99 percent. Nordstrom’s is over 31 percent! With credit card debt moving about $1 trillion for the first time ever, something has to slow down, right? Today I head to Las Vegas, forecast 103 degrees, and I have already been fielding emails about lenders are selling servicing, busy further cutting costs, or making sure they collect money that is due them (like appraisal fees, as noted in this STRATMOR piece). Some companies are looking to acquire or be acquired. Mergers and acquisitions don’t only happen with lenders. For example, yesterday, in the compliance consulting biz, Firstline Compliance announced that Mark Wilson, Managing Partner, and Dustin Pfluger, Partner and Mortgage Banking Pra

Lending continues to be intertwined with legal and compliance issues. Here’s a story from overnight that is catching a lot of attention: “Equifax stock falls after saying it received a CID from the CFPB.” The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) agreed to drop its challenge to Intercontinental Exchange Inc.’s (ICE) proposed deal with Black Knight Inc. in a joint stipulation that allows them to work toward a settlement. Lender ToolKit is suing Celebrity Home Loans and MLD. and Meanwhile, lenders and vendors are doing what they can to increase business and tap into new markets, and with that in mind National MI is sponsoring a weekly podcast beginning today focused on offering mortgages to people in their 20s and 30s (Mortgages with Millennials). (Today’s podcast can be found here and is sponsored by SimpleNexus, an nCino Company, developer of mortgage technology uniting the people, systems, and stages of the mortgage process into one seamless, end-to-end sol

Mortgages are only part of our lives, right? I only know what I read online, although Abraham Lincoln once said, “Don’t believe everything you read on the internet.” Before you fly down the freeway on a summer vacation, I also know that I have received my fair share of speeding tickets. (For those of you who haven’t, it’s a “punch in the gut” feeling to see that red light in the rear-view mirror. I’ve been able to talk them out of… none.) In something that smacks of Big Brother watching all the data, apparently 9 percent of drivers had a speeding ticket in 2022. Those drivers probably knew the speed limits, but in case you’d like a map of worldwide speed limits, here you go. (Thank you to Carol K.!) The official FHFA 2024 loan limits won’t be out until around Thanksgiving, of course, but in terms of inventions there is no limit on innovation. Face it: there isn’t a lot of innovation in lending.
