are both in town today. or at least in, in the state today. it wasn t planned that way, but i hope trump s presence, ah, here is maybe a clarifying moment for us all. american farmers have been crush by his tariff war. we try and no one knows that better than the folks of iowa. you know, he thinks that being tough, he s being tough. well, it s easy to be tough when someone else is feeling the pain and taking a hit. senator coons of delaware joins us now. what about that. is vice president biden making a mistake by focusing so much on the president david axelrod was making the point, howard dean as well, about needing to be for something and talking about what
now to protect bob mueller, senator coons of delaware and jeff flake who is retiring, republican of arizona. chad, is it a realistic threat anyway? a number are pushing this but update me. mitch mcconnell, senate majority leader, said didn t think legislation was necessary to protect bob mueller. he indicated based on what the president had told him, he didn t think there was any promise or threat from the white house to get rid of bob mueller. it doesn t sit well with senators on both sides of the aisle. what happened in the past 35 minutes, senator flake and senator coons asked for unanimous consent that the senate start debate immediately on a bill to protect bob mueller from firing. they started last week we had the firing of jeff sessions. what unanimous consent needs in the senate is you need the blessing of all 100 senators. it just takes one objection. in that case, it was mitch mcconnell.
that s why you saw secretary kerry not taking a victory lap. the team doesn t want to rub noses in this. even to get to 34 has been a difficult battle. the jewish community is torn, democratic party is torn. this is a very, very difficult vote. even for those like senator coons of delaware who came out in support yesterday who said this isn t the deal that i wanted. it s going to be a deal he supports, but there are a lot of problems with the deal and so to get from 34 to 41, you don t want to start jumping up and down. they really want to get to the point where the veto vote, they don t want to make it more difficult for those who are still swirming maybe about to announce their support but don t want to yet seeking more time. and hearing both sides. people have wanted to take as long as they could to give deference to both sides. and i think the white house is true to not call it a victory quite yet. amy, give me a sense of how important it is for this white house not to have to us
generations with that debt. the super committee, maybe they will come up with $1.2 trillion in cuts but they aren t dealing with baseline budget. even the fed said the chance of a new recession tops 50 percent. what is the answer? how do we get congress really to adopt bold responsible programs instead of basically playing the old washington insider game and just punching around the edges here? there are two fundamental things. number one we have to win an election. people that believe in limited government and believe government should be making it easier, not harder to create jobs in america, we need more people like that elected in 2012. but that election is not until november of next year and people are hurting right now. in the interim i think we need to do the best we can without doing any further marm the way the administration would have us do through some of their ideas. what i have basically done, i have sat down with a democrat, with senator coons of delaware and i have id
