"We welcome the Indian Supreme Court’s order to reconsider the sedition law, which has been used arbitrarily and widely against peaceful critics," the UN Human Rights said in a tweet.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appearing for the Centre said he will discuss it with the government and suggested that there can be guidelines on the issue until the government reconsiders the issue.
According to a NCRB report, a total of 356 cases of sedition as defined under section 124A of the IPC were registered and 548 people were arrested between 2015 and 2020, out of which only six were convicted.
