With the mental health care system needing additional resources, people aren’t able to receive the services they need, or before reaching a crisis. Besides access to a mental health professional, barriers like transportation, child care, open hours, cost of services and finding where to get services create difficulties in receiving care.
One in 5 Americans experience a mental illness. Fifty percent of mental health conditions begin by 14 years old and 75% by 24 years old. The National Alliance on Mental Illness also reports that the average delay between symptoms and treatment is 11 years. As of 2020, 21% of adults indicated a mental illness.
About 20 Wadena community members watched the documentary at a suicide prevention training on Sept. 29, along with hearing from the panel members of Eagle’s Healing Nest director Melony Butler, Wadena-Deer Creek high school social worker Laura Kiser, Maureen Baymler of New York Mills and Amanda Kramer of Alexandria.
“Suicide is not an illness, it is a symptom of a person who is feeling an overwhelming level of emotional pain to the point where they do not know any other way to stop feeling this level of pain they’re feeling,” said Chris Shaw, The Heart and Mind Connection executive director.
