Francine Lafontaine has been named interim dean at Michigan Ross, the school announced earlier this week. Effective May 24, she replaces Scott DeRue, who announced a month ago his departure from the post to take a senior executive position at an undisclosed company. Lafontaine, whose research focuses on industrial organization, has worked at UM more than 25 years, joining the business school as an assistant professor in 1995. She has served as a professor and the associate dean for Business + Impact at the school since 2010. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan has received more than $1 million as a result of a gift from the Applebaum Family Philanthropy to support its Business+Impact initiative, which focuses on multidisciplinary, action-based learning in social impact, sustainability, poverty alleviation, and related policy. The gift will establish the Applebaum Family Business+Impact Experiences and Innovation Program at Michigan Ross. This new program will allow the school to enhance and expand its impact and design offerings, including the creation of a permanent endowment fund for need-based internships and scholarships to Business+Impact students.

Scott DeRue to Leave Ross s Deanship

In an email sent to the Ross community, DeRue said he would take a senior executive position in the private sector and described his time at Ross as “the greatest professional honor of my life.” During his time at Ross, DeRue oversaw a variety of program changes, from adding a STEM track to the school’s MBA program to the creation of new master’s programs.  According to Poets & Quants, Ross was the only school to have every one of its specialized programs rank in US News’s rankings this year.
