begging for help. this morning the justice department is stepping in at the request of the mayor to investigate the police response to this mass shooting. specifically why it took so long to take down that gunman. today we will see the first of several funeral services remembering the lives lost in this tragedy. over the weekend, president biden and the first lady met with the families of victims and with first responders in uvalde, the president vowed once again as we ve heard so often in america, to do something about gun violence. it was the second time in less than two weeks that the president mourned alongside families whose loved ones died in the mass shooting. we are covering this story, of course, from every angle. our reporters and corespondents are standing by. let s bring you our senior legal correspondent, paula reed. great to have you here. you broke this yesterday, that the justice department is going to step in. they will review all aspects of the law enforceme
we have a child on the line. he is in a room full of victims at this moment. cnn has not been able to independently confirm that video, but source of this video sun clear, and it s also not clear at what point in the incident that audio is heard. cnn has reached out to authorities. but we do know that texas authorities, what they said on friday that there were at least eight 911 calls that day from at least two separate callers inside the school over a span of 50 minutes. this all comes as the justice department announces it will investigate the police response to the shooting. and meantime the community will hold its first services for two victims of the tragedy later today. we ll have more on that in a moment but first let s get straight to cnn s paula reed live for more on this investigation and the new doj s role. what do you know with the doj s involvement? that s exactly the kind of evidence that the doj will want to examine as it conducts its review. this is not
dispatch audio about a child trapped in the middle of the massacre in uvalde, texas. cnn has not been able to confirm this audio clip. it was first reported by abc news. it s unclear when the message was relayed, but according to the texas public safety director there were at least eight 911 calls from at least two callers inside robb elementary. we have a child on the line. he is in a room full of victims. at least 19 officers were just on the other side of the door of that classroom where the student was calling from. texas public safety officials reported the first call from a child came at 12:03 p.m. not until 12:50, 47 minutes later, would officers finally break in and kill the gunman. so the justice department will now investigate the local law enforcement response. one critic called it one of the worst police failures in modern u.s. history. in the meantime, democrats are trying to seize whatever momentum there is on capitol hill for gun reform. here is presi
