Freeholder at 175: The day the bank gave way, and the bridge fell

Article content On Friday, June 26, 1908, the left side of The Freeholder’s front page was dedicated to a catastrophic event: a disaster at the Cornwall canal. The headline that day provided a quick synopsis of what happened, “Break at Lock 18 – 200 Feet of Bank Carried into the River – Collapse of the O. & N. Y. Draw Bridge.” We apologize, but this video has failed to load. Try refreshing your browser. Freeholder at 175: The day the bank gave way, and the bridge fell Back to video Considered the “worst break in the history of the Cornwall canal,” a large slice of the south bank above Lock 18 washed out into the river. Freeholder at 175: Fire razes orphanage housing CAS wards

Article content On Friday, May 5, 1950, a column on the left-hand side of the Standard Freeholder’s city and district news front page boasted the headline: “Mayor’s Orphanage Relief Fund Being Swelled By Donations,” because Cornwall had suffered another tragic fire. At the bottom of the page, there is a photograph of Rev. Sister Ste. Emily and Mrs. McDougall, with three children. The children are all clearly younger than eight, and they all wear the same blank stare with big piercing eyes, painting an obvious portrait to the readers about the tragic afternoon they had just experienced. We apologize, but this video has failed to load.
