James Slavin had been hanged that morning for the murder of Const. John Robert Davey, the only member of the Cornwall police force to be killed in the line of duty.

On Sept. 6, 1892, John Robert Davey was on foot patrol at the Grand Trunk Railway yards on Ninth Street (where Baxtrom’s Your Independent Grocer is today). The circus was in town, as well as a former resident (who was basically became a drifter), James Slavin.
