Former Everton goalkeeper who was Watford s player of the 1970s

The Watford Observer has again teamed up with its friends at The Watford Treasury to share stories from previous issues. Although seven different goalkeepers appeared for Watford during the 1970s, the position was dominated by one man. Andy Rankin was Watford’s player of the decade, writes Geoff Wicken. To be a Watford supporter in the early and mid-1970s was, mostly, a dispiriting experience. The six seasons starting from 1971/72 saw almost continuous decline. There were two relegations, in 1971/72 and 1974/75, followed by two years of stasis in Division Four. Then everything changed. The turnaround inspired by Graham Taylor’s arrival brought the two consecutive promotions of 1977/78 and 1978/79. Those six years of gloom were followed by two of dramatic upturn, and by autumn 1979 Watford were back in Division Two, where they had been eight years earlier.

Memories of Watford career of a Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal great

By David Harrison Pat Jennings shows off those giant hands which were to serve him so well during his career The Watford Observer has again teamed up with its friends at The Watford Treasury to share stories from previous issues. David Harrison looks at a true Watford treasure, although his tenure at the club was all too brief. Watford have been blessed throughout the modern era (not unreasonably defined here as the period I can remember), with outstanding goalkeepers. Tony Coton remains the best I’ve seen at The Vic, but Andy Rankin, Steve Sherwood, David James, Kevin Miller and Alec Chamberlain were all Watford goalkeepers of distinction. Current players are excluded from a retrospective piece, but no doubt both Heurelho Gomes and Ben Foster will earn a place in that list.

Geoff Barnett, former Everton reserve goalkeeper, dies at 74 Saturday, 16 January, 2021 Geoff Barnett, former Everton reserve goalkeeper from Harry Catterick s 1960s sides and understudy to Gordon West, died in Florida, age 74. Geoff was scouted from local football, joining the club in May 1964, and won the FA Youth Cup with the Blues in 1965, alongside John Hurst and Jimmy Husband, but was unable to regularly dislodge Gordon West and Andy Rankin from Harry Catterick s fantastic sixties sides. He kept a clean sheet on his debut against Sunderland at Goodison Park in November 1965 and made eight more appearances between the sticks that season, including the famous game at Blackpool when a 16-year-old Joe Royle made his debut at centre-forward in place of Alex Young.
