Development to blame for inaccurate flood plain map in Midland Co

Development to blame for inaccurate flood plain map in Midland Co. What was once a flood plain is now developed homes and businesses. The water was never rerouted. The results? Flooded property. Author: Sammi Steele Updated: 6:19 PM CDT July 7, 2021 MIDLAND, Texas While the rain has held off this week, flooding continues to impact homeowners across Midland county.  Aside from mother nature, we are learning development is also to blame.  More people are moving to the area and it has changed the landscape quite literally.  Half a years’ worth of rainfall in one week has caused the county problems it has never encountered before.

Strangers save young boy from drowning

Now his family wants help finding the heroes who saved him. Author: Sammi Steele Updated: 7:24 PM CDT July 6, 2021 ODESSA, Texas A defining moment for three strangers who helped save an 11-year-old from drowning over the weekend. Khais Green was playing in the shallow end of the Fundome pool with some other kids on Saturday when he ended up in the deep end. The young boy is not a good swimmer and was not able to keep his head above water. That is when three good Samaritans jumped in and pulled his unconscious body out of the pool. They began performing CPR and helped his family get him to Medical Center Hospital, where he was then airlifted to Lubbock.

Midland County surveying flood damage

Midland County surveying flood damage The county has created a survey to gather information on storm damage. From there, the county plans on updating the flood plain. Author: Sammi Steele Updated: 6:55 PM CDT July 5, 2021 MIDLAND, Texas With water slowly evaporating across the Basin, it is time for the real work to begin.   “There’s not much you can do for flooding when it starts flooding, you have to wait for the waters to recede so what you need to do is wait for that and build a better infrastructure for the future, Justin Bunch, Midland Emergency Management, said. “All that information we are gathering, all the videos and pictures is for the commissioners, road and bridge, county engineer, TxDOT, its just information for them,”  Bunch said.

Areas in Midland still under water have locals asking now what?

Unfortunately, time and sunshine might be the only solution as water evaporates. The blame here likely lies with mother nature.  “This is one of those situations, and no one knew what was going to happen and they put way too many floodwaters into way too small of an area,” Scott Ramsey, Midland County Commissioner, precinct 1, said. Mix together a record amount of rain in four days, rapid development behind Cinergy off Faudree and a drainage system that was in the midst of being reconstructed, and you have yourself the perfect storm. “I had someone suggest, why don’t we pump the water out but where do we put it?” Ramsey said.
