On March 31, DePaul University’s Office of the President sent out an email to DePaul faculty, staff and students entitled “Statement Against Hate” and “Here, We Stand Together.”
The email quotes a message from St. Vincent de Paul followed by “Love and hate cannot coexist, so there is no room for hate here.”
The statement, signed by 31 top DePaul administrators, including DePaul President A. Gabriel Esteban and interim Provost Salma Ghanem, also condemns racism and violence.
“We support all who are part of our university community,” it reads. “We affirm that hate has no home here.”

Alik Schier has trouble viewing his college classes as what they are: school.
“I know I’ve got to do class, but it’s like camera off, mic off, taking notes and then ‘bye!’” the DePaul freshman said, slamming an imaginary laptop.
Schier is just one of 19.6 million American college students who plunged into online schooling last spring when the Covid-19 pandemic began infecting millions, decimating normal everyday life. A year later, the effects that those changes have had on students are becoming apparent.

Coya Paz Brownrigg has been appointed the interim dean of DePaul University’s Theatre School , beginning July 1, according to a Newsline release.
“Coya will be an effective advocate for continuing The Theatre School’s success during this time of transition,” Interim Provost Salma Ghanem told Newsline. “Her creative passion and empathic leadership style will serve the school well, and I appreciate her willingness to serve as interim dean.”
The news comes after the Nov. 2020 announcement that current Theatre School Dean John Culbert is stepping down at the end of the 2020-2021 academic year after serving at DePaul for 33 years.

The Office of Alumni Relations held a roundtable discussion with several prominent panelists including President A. Gabriel Esteban and interim Provost Salma Ghanem.
Moderated by Daniel Allen, senior vice president for advancement, the roundtable focused on how the pandemic affects the community and its impact for the future.
The panelists included Esteban and his wife Josephine, Ghanem, Vice President of Student Affairs Gene Zdziarski, and Now We Must Chair Sasha Gerritson.

Despite the hurdles posed by the pandemic, DePaul has seen improvements in several areas, including faculty evaluations and engagement.
