Faculty are pushing for DePaul President A. Gabriel Esteban to commit to actionable change against racism.
Professor Valerie Johnson, of DePaul’s political science department, sent a statement to Esteban Friday following the release of an open letter detailing issues faced by DePaul’s Black community. The letter, which was spearheaded by both the DePaul University Black Leadership Coalition (DPUBLC) and the Black Student Union (BSU), was sent to the president April 26.
Following the letter’s release, Esteban responded via a statement to DPUBLC, according to university representatives.

DePaul’s Student Government Association (SGA) highlighted the initiatives its members worked on last quarter in its Winter Quarter Transparency Report.
The report, obtained by The DePaulia, explains how SGA “advocated for student concerns, especially with the continued stress of remote learning,” and supported marginalized communities at DePaul during the winter quarter.
According to the report, SGA “released a statement condemning the violent insurrection at our nation’s Capitol and amplified the [Black Student Union]’s list of demands” to advocate for marginalized students and plans to release a solidarity statement in support of the APIDA community at DePaul, “further supporting their needs, especially with the rise of anti-Asian hate crimes in the past year.”

DePaul’s Vice President of Enrollment Management Soumitra Ghosh joined DePaul’s Student Government Association during its general body meeting Thursday providing members with an update about the university’s enrollment numbers for spring and fall 2021.
According to Ghosh, the university will end spring quarter with a total headcount of 19,012 students, which was 97 percent of DePaul’s budgeted goal of 19,597 students but 2.7 percent behind compared to spring quarter last year.
But DePaul’s budgeted goal for this quarter was 3.5 percent lower than that of last year.
Some of DePaul’s colleges have not met DePaul’s budgeted enrollment goals.
