Ranchi: Police have intensified their drive to destroy poppy plant in Ranchi, Khunti and other districts of the state as the crop. Poppy cultivation is banned in Jharkhand, but many farmers continue to cultivation to earn money. An inter-state network is also promoting the cultivation as the opium derived from the plant is sold at high price.
In Khunti district, poppy crop on 100-odd acres have been destroyed under various police stations in the past few days during the drive. Police said five police stations in Khunti, Murhu and Arki blocks have the highest opium cultivation. Several gram sabhas have resolved not to allow poppy cultivation in their area.
