Indigenous groups extend support to petition filed against CAA

Our CorrespondentDiphu, Nov. 19 (EMN): The indigenous ethnic groups of Assam has extended support to the petition filed in the Supreme Court of India by the Asom Sanmilita Mahasangh for the protection of the rights of the indigenous people of Assam. Bijoy Bey, president of Kari Students’ Association; Bipul Tisso, general secretary of Kari Students and Youth Council; Thongthang Touthang, president Kuki National Assembly; Lengin Singson, president of Kuki Students’ Organisation ; Dhiraj Diphusa, president of Dimasa Students’ Union; and Jaybabu Singh, and general secretary of Assam Meitei Apunba Lup have associated themselves as co-petitioners in the Matiur Rahma vs Government of India petition filed against the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 which is under consideration in the Supreme Court, said Khorsing Teron, convenor of Hills Tribal League, during a press conference held at Karbi Students’ Association office here on Saturday. 17th National Mourning Day observed in Karbi Anglong

Our Correspondent Diphu, Oct. 17 (EMN): The 17th National Mourning Day was observed on Monday to commemorate those who lost their lives in a mass massacre on October 17, 2005 in West Karbi Anglong. Miscreants attacked and killed innocent lives from two Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) transport buses coming down from Jirikending at Charchim – Prisek. Altogether 41 innocent lives, including children, were lost. The National Mourning Day was held at the incident site at Charchim – Prisek. Keeping aside political and religious differences, the victim’s family members and public participated in the mourning day by offering prayers at the commemorative stone. Participating in the mourning day, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) also offered floral tribute and prayers to the victims at the commemorative stone erected at the site. JCCPA: Boundary issue of Karbi Anglong, Meghalaya resolved in 1951

Our Correspondent Diphu, Aug. 27 (EMN): Following a meeting between Assam and Meghalaya committee on Aug. 21 to solve disputes in six remaining border areas between the two states, the Joint coordination for Committee for Protection of Autonomy (JCCPA) said that the boundary issue in Karbi Anglong has already been resolved in 1951 and there is no need to re-open it again. In a press conference held at the residence of Saising Rongpi, Rongmongve in Diphu on Saturday, the convenor, JCCPA, Kharsing Teron said that the two governments have claimed that they have already resolved in 6 areas and signed a pack on March 29, 2022. The second phase of discussion started on Aug. 1 last with regional committees to be constituted by respective governments.
