50% of Indiaâs Covid cases are from Maharashtra but testing lags behind national average
Of the total new cases in Maharashtra everyday, about 40% are from Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur & Amravati district. Amravati is most worrying with its test positivity rate at 23-24%.

Mumbai: Maharashtra, which has always accounted for the bulk of India’s Covid-19 cases, is now contributing more than 50 per cent of the new cases in the country, in what is being feared as a second wave.
The state, however, continues to be a laggard in Covid testing, with its performance being much below the national average â which experts say is the main reason behind the high number of new cases.Â

Pune: A group of 60 frontline staff who are performing a major responsibility in the fight against Covid in the district are feeling ignored.
These are workers at the Common Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facilities. There are two biomedical garbage processing plants in the district, one for the city located at Sangawadi and another for Pimpri-Chinchwad at Yashwantrao Chavan Municipal Hospital, which have the responsibility of collecting biomedical waste from 5,500 healthcare facilities and then incinerating or recycling it.

The coronavirus situation is fairly under control in most regions across India. Pune, which has been among the most-affected cities due to the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, also has the rate of spread of the virus under its control to a large extent. Now, it has been reported that for the first time since the virus outbreak began last year, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has fewer number of active cases than the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).
