First Opening Statement comes from david perdue. Well, good afternoon. Its nice to be here with the chamber. Appreciate you guys hosting us today. I feel right at home today for two reasons. One, like you, ive spent the last 40 years working in the global economy, completing, providing products and services to customers. And in so doing, adding value to our economy and creating opportunities for people to provide for themselves and their families. The second reason, i am home. I was born down the street at macon hospital. I grew up in Warner Robins. My mom and dad were schoolteachers. I grew up working on our family farms. Outlook for the weekend. And a man told a judge to give him the Death Penalty for a crime. The judge did not grant that request. The courthouse is closing for a threeday weekend and the jury will have that emotional testimony. That will be the last thing they will have heard before this break begins. Now you had the son of the grandmother who was also the father of the baby, her other son and then you had a letter from the babys mother, all expressing to a jury how heartbroken they are with this loss and how they can Never Trust Anyone again. He wanted the Death Penalty. What do you make of that . I dont know whether that will get before the jury or not. He and i agree on that. First assistant d. A. Kevin steele says its the first thing he and convicted baby killer Raghunandan Yandamuri agree on, that he should get the Death Penalty. Some of his thoughts at this moment are born out of the unbelievable emotion of having just lost a first degree murder case that he thought he might win.
Logistics, exercise participation, basic military intelligence training, humanitarian assistance and he military action. Moving forward, the Defense Department stands ready to work with our colleagues to determine the best way ahead including providing additional infantry training. The scale of need is significant. To date we have trained one battalion with 500 soldiers and military in numbers of approximately 150,000. The capacity for assistance is limited. The Congolese Defense ministry has been slow to respond to our request for a corporate training and information necessary for congressionally mandated human rights. The lack of english language capacity further and have its training opportunities. While the drc continues to develop its own security capabilities, Un Peacekeeping operation remains essential. There is a challenging mandate. We are reviewing options for improving ability to meet civilian protection requirements in the drc. The Defense Department has supplied military o
Slavery was an economic and social institution so essential to the security of the south they were willing to destroy the nation to preserve it. Those who continue to deny this in the face of this overwhelming documentation that slavery was central to the conflict point to the fact that it was not a crusade to free the slaves. This is true. The war did not begin as a crusade to free the slaves. But the war did begin as a southern Independence Movement aimed at preserving slavery. That is why freedom for slaves eventually became a warning of the United States government. In 1862, lincoln made his famous reply to the publisher of the new york tribune, and everyone knows this. His primary mission as president was to save the country. He would do so, if it meant not freeing any slaves at all. He also pointed out that if saving United States meant freeing some, or even all of the slaves, he would do that. What i do about slavery and the colored race, i do because i believe it helps to save
Thank you for all you have done. This whole theme is very exciting. Civil war to civil rights. I served on the georgia civil War Planning Commission and was the chief advisor to the chairman. One of the things i said when we started the commission was planning five or six years ago is we have an opportunity to do something we cannot do 50 years ago in georgia. We have an opportunity to speak and talk honestly about the civil war and its causes and outcomes. We also have an opportunity in the process of doing that to reach some kind of not only understanding but reconciliation in the process of doing that. One of the most important healing methods is just to be honest about things and look at evidence and talk about in a way that includes every body. Just the fact that 50 years ago during the civil war centennial, you and i could not have been on the stage together talking about it. It shows what a remarkable opportunity it is.
