Outlook for the weekend. And a man told a judge to give him the Death Penalty for a crime. The judge did not grant that request. The courthouse is closing for a threeday weekend and the jury will have that emotional testimony. That will be the last thing they will have heard before this break begins. Now you had the son of the grandmother who was also the father of the baby, her other son and then you had a letter from the babys mother, all expressing to a jury how heartbroken they are with this loss and how they can Never Trust Anyone again. He wanted the Death Penalty. What do you make of that . I dont know whether that will get before the jury or not. He and i agree on that. First assistant d. A. Kevin steele says its the first thing he and convicted baby killer Raghunandan Yandamuri agree on, that he should get the Death Penalty. Some of his thoughts at this moment are born out of the unbelievable emotion of having just lost a first degree murder case that he thought he might win. I dont give much credibility to his stated desire to receive the Death Penalty. Reporter it is something the family of a 61yearold grandmother and 10monthold baby are asking for,c telling jury that they thought the phone was broken when they couldnt be reached in the upper merion apartment. They will never forget the crime scene, the blood and the frantic search for the baby, only to learn the baby was dead. He could not go to india to bury his mother because he didnt know where his baby was. Bre breaking for the weekend with this testimony is not helpful to their client. When yandamuri made those statements earlier this morning, before a Montgomery County judge, that was not in the presence of a jury. The jury was still recessed at that point. The judge told him he had to continue with the penalty phase. As those victim pact statements were being told and read to the jury, Raghunandan Yandamuri sat with his head down and his forehead covered by his hands, not looking at anyone in the courtroom. Reporting live in norristown, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. Quick question, deanna. Do legal observers believe hes serious about wanting the Death Penalty . His own attorneys say he may be asking for the Death Penalty but theyre not certain their clients really wants to be put to death. What they did express to us, they dont think this is a ploy or stun the. They think yandamuri is afraid of going to prison with the stigma of being a convicted killer of a baby and how he will be treated in priz. Hes afraid hell be assaulted if hes put in with general population. What they think hes after is the protection that death row inmates get because theyre often in solitary confinement for most of the day, having very little interaction with other inmates. Deanna durante, watching this case for us. Thank you. New developments tonight out of west africa. The World Health Organization said today the death toll from ebola has surpassed 4,000. Reporter so far, there have been at least 4,000 deaths and 8,300 diagnosed cases. Nearly all of them in three west african nations. Chris pallone, nbc news, dallas. By now youve probably seen this internet video showing an ebola scare aboard a u. S. Airways plane that left philadelphia. No one was actually sick here and thises with all one passengers prank. But to Emergency Responders on that plane, it was no prank. Matt delucia is at the airport. I know you spoke with transit officials today. One of the questions were hearing now from the traveling public is whether ebola is now becoming one of those words you cant say on an airplane. And looking at the response on that u. S. Airways jet, i took that very question to those with ties to the transportation and National Security fields in our area. This is the man accused of killingkill killingc telling a plane fu of passengers that he had ebola. He was escorted off the u. S. Airways jet after it landed in pun t punta cana. I think that there should be severe consequences for this reckless behavior to drive home the lesson to anyone who would contemplate this kind of act. Reporter i spoke with National Security expert ed trazanski says that offenders cannot plead ignorance or claim ebola is a joke and get away with it. When the consequences of your free speech start affecting others, youre going to pay a price. Reporter but if this can happen on a plane, what about other forms of mass transit . I asked septa how they would handle such a situation in highranking officials declined an oncamera interview but tell me they will assess every situation with common sense, adding that the threat of ebola is not high enough to warrant any request or demands by the cdc. As for criminal charges, none have been announced as of yet. Do you think Something Like this would constitute a terroristic threat . No, not necessarily. It could, depends on what his objective was. I think this is ranked stupidity more than anything. Reporter officials in punta cana tell me they checked the mans passport and he had in fact not been to africa, at least not recently. But when the man was questioned as to why he made that remark, he had no response. Live at Philadelphia International airport, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. Right now on nbc10.
