A spot to be here, you know . Theyre here because they did something to make a difference in their community. So its not like were bringing a bunch of kids to tell them they should help. Were bringing kids who are helping, so that kids at home who are sitting down, watching maybe want to do something and know they can. We day encourages children to think beyond their communities and to realize that, together, we can have an effect on change in the world, and its theirs to change. But theres more than just star power on this red carpet. Although not immediately recognizable as celebrities, these folks are the true inspirational force behind this movement. Its an exhilarating feeling, because all these people are here, and theyre excited for you, so its gonna be awesome. I think its amazing, and its so cool to be in an environment where theres so many people like myself that really want to make a difference and change things. The first we day that i ever spoke at, we had about 5,000 stud
To a project to improve her community, to improve her world, the amount of hours that it takes to attain that, its really a major commitment. The first step is deciding what your silver award project will be. It should be something that fulfills a need in your community and is important to you. They could be working in a Senior Citizen center and doing something creative for the Senior Citizens. It could be creating a Literacy Program for kids in elementary school, helping kids with math. Girl scouts can work on their project individually or two or three can work together. Leadership is important. Scouts going for silver need to put together a project team. This could consist of friends, family, and even members of the community. Most projects will need some funding. Raising that money is each scouts responsibility. So today were doing a bake sale to raise money to provide families of nonverbal special Needs Children with identification bracelets in case they get separated from their g
What makes it special would be surprising to us it has books room to read is an organization that is opening schools and libraries across the developing world for the poorest of the poor hundreds of schools, thousands of libraries so that every child everywhere is no longer denied an education because they were born in the wrong place at the wrong time. John wood is an amazing guy. He used to be a big executive at microsoft until he went on vacation in nepal. Thats when he saw the desperate need for books and libraries. He changed the course of his own life to change the lives of children all over the world. When i was growing up in pennsylvania, we had actually a bookmobile that came to our town. And we think of this kind of as a nepalese yakmobile. Weve got our yak loaded with books, and were about to head off to go to a secondary school here to deliver about 500 books to help them start their first library. When john arrives with his yakmobile, just look at the reaction. Reading isn
Over 3 million tons of ewaste ends up in landfills every year. Some of it contains Hazardous Materials like lead, which can lead to Serious Health problems. Thats why collection events like this one are important. People can drop off their unwanted or broken electronics, instead of throwing them in the trash. Computers, monitors, tvs, mixed electronics pretty much anything with a plug. The material is sorted, weighed, and then shipped to a plant for processing. Were whats called the demanufacturing facility. So we actually take apart all of the equipment and break it down to the smallest unit, or what we call a commodity product. For instance, the easiest one to understand is plastic, because everything that you have is covered in plastic your mp3 players are covered in plastic, your monitors are covered in plastic. Plastic is one of those items that we can reuse, so we break it down to the plastic components, so we kind of s
Airconditioning at all. They dont have lights. They dont have floor. They dont have toilets. Theyre really extreme poverty conditions. Bad as conditions are in countries like uganda, girls have it even worse. The reason i focus on Subsaharan Africa is because girls never get the chance. Theyre often married off at a very young age or they just are used to work at home and work in the fields while the boys go to school. And thats why reverse the course was born. So, why dont you come help me make a bow . Okay. Reverse the course is a business and foundation that i started at the age of 12. I really wanted to help one girl go to school, and so i thought by selling products, i could raise money to pay her tuition. But before she could sell any products, she needed to make them. And that included learning some new skills. So it took about a month, maybe two months to really teach myself how to sew. And, like, i can only do a straight line, still.
