A campaign has been launched to preserve a famous Lancashire landmark for future generations.
A new chapter is being written in the topsy-turvy story of one of Lancashire’s best-loved landmarks. Since they were created in the early years of the last century, the terraced gardens at Rivington have seen almost as many ups and downs in their fortunes as there are twists and turns on the paths through the magical landscape.
The gardens were created by Thomas Mawson for the industrialist and politician William Hesketh Lever, Lord Leverhulme. He bought the land in 1899 and had a wooden bungalow built there for weekend visits and shooting parties and developed the gardens over the next two decades.
A NEW coffee van that will help a charity with its running costs while providing invaluable experience to its service users has launched. Backup North West, a Bolton charity which helps young people who are homeless to gain skills for independence, has been operating for nearly 30 years. In their latest venture, a coffee and cake van has been created to help with funds as well as assisting people in gaining job skills for their CV. Charity CEO Maura Jackson said that the funds mean the charity won t rely entirely on grants and other donations - though they plan on the van being a staple of the community in its own right.
BOLTON-born DJ Mark Radcliffe was back in his hometown retracing his childhood footsteps as he backed a campaign to preserve the historic Rivington Terraced Gardens for future generations. The Bolton School old boy is the latest big name to support an appeal to raise money for the upkeep of the restored gardens, which because of the pandemic has lost tens of thousands of pounds through cancelled events. Under the ‘Squarea’ initiative members of the public can sponsor a patch of land in the Japanese Garden, the Italian Lake, the Dell, the Woodlands, or the Lawns on the gardens, with funds being used to maintain the Rivington Gardens.
