RIGBY, Idaho (ABC) Police are hailing an Idaho teacher as a hero for her role in helping stop a potential mass shooting.
A sixth-grade girl pulled a handgun from her backpack Thursday and started shooting inside Rigby Middle School before moving outside where she continued to fire.
“We heard a one gunshot, and then right after we heard another, and we heard multiple kids screaming,” explained Lucy, a fellow sixth-grader at Rigby Middle School. “My friends and I were freaking out and we were hiding in the corner of our classroom.”
Teacher Krista Gneiting has confirmed to ABC News that she was the one who disarmed the shooter, detaining her until police arrived.

STUDENTS said that they heard screams and saw blood in the halls after a sixth-grade girl shot three people.
The three people who were shot in the Thursday morning attack sustained non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Jefferson County Sheriff Steve Anderson said the girl pulled a handgun from her backpack at the Idaho middle school and fired off several rounds. A sixth-grade, female student retrieved a handgun from her backpack, she fired multiple rounds inside of the school and out [and] she injured three people, Anderson said.

Three people were shot - two students and one adult janitor - and taken to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in non-critical condition
She received praise for her heroic act and she took to social media to thank her community for its support
Gneiting said she did not want any money and said we will get through this together in a Facebook post
In the US, sixth-grade children are usually 11 or 12 years old.
A teacher disarmed the girl and held her until law enforcement arrived and took her into custody, authorities said.
All three victims were shot in their extremities. Authorities say they are investigating the motive for the attack and how the girl got the gun.
Police were called to the school at about 9.15am after pupils and staffers heard gunfire.
“Me and my classmate were just in class with our teacher – we were doing work – and then all of a sudden, there was a loud noise and then there were two more loud noises. Then there was screaming,” said Yandel Rodriguez, 12. “Our teacher went to check it out and he found blood.”

Police have not publicly identified any of the victims or the juvenile suspect.
“My heart is touched by all the incredible outpouring of love I’ve received,” Gneiting wrote.
“Thank you.I don’t want money, I just appreciate the incredible support of Rigby!!! I love my students so much! It is why I teach!! They make my heart happy every every day!!!! All of the staff at Rigby did their part and kept our wonderful children safe! Thank you! I love you all and we will get through this together.”
