Forward or even in the middle of the essay. The way i distinguish contextualization from making connections is contextualization means it is either within or next to the time period. Making connections, you are making a jump, maybe 20, 50, 1 00 years. I wouldnt go much farther. So it is not directed connected directly connected to the time period. Guest so a good example of that, with what we have been talking about with reconstruction is that, contextualization might take into account the situation for africanamericans in the United States immediately prior to the civil war, maybe in the 1850s or the 1840s. And a complexity point might be at the end of the essay, to look forward to well after reconstruction, the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s, as an attempt to redress many of the problems that came out of reconstruction in that failed revolution. Host lets go to will, who is calling from buffalo, new york. Will, do you have a question for our distinguished teachers here
To a political solution, a political agreement to end the war. In this battle, the largest that has ever been fought by the United States army in its history, better than 600,000 better than 600,000 americans were engaged. And you can see, our lines famously bulged but they did not break. However, you have the story of the siege that is going to be depicted here. Most famously, George Patton is going to come up and save the town from the south after they had been surrendered. This was an incident that Many Americans will recognize from where thepatton, Commanding Officer was asked by the germans to surrender and he famously said to them one word, nuts. In this case here, you get a sense of how logistics are so important in war, particularly with things like gasoline up here. We have a german gas tank where you can actually see the sf markings on the side. Germans were running out of gasoline. We, however, are going to also not only have to deal with moving mechanical vehicles, tanks, a

Regiments have arrived in harrisburg. The eighth and 71st new York State National guard, put them on cvrr trains, and they head south to shippensburg. With chambersburg cut off, shippensburg is the new Central Organization point for the Pennsylvania State militia. You obviously cant get to chambersburg because it is south of the bridge at scotland which is no longer in existence. So they have to walk from shippensburg down to scotland, and they are going to guard bridge crews that are definitely trying to put cvrrs bridge back into place so that the army can use this if they need to. Jenkins hears about the militia roaring down the tracks heading towards his position. Jenkins withdraws into west virginia. Actually into maryland, sorry. Well, jenkins moves back into pennsylvania on june 22. Fronting the division. The new your curse, no hearing infantry is coming with artillery, abandon ship and head back to harrisburg, now leaving the Cumberland Valley totally unprotected other than a f
Allied troops was very small. Discipline was quite admirable. Say, among the soviet troops less so, i would say, among the soviet troops coming from the east. That was part of the price and the pain of victory. Host lets go back to calls and hear from lorenz in st. Paul, minnesota. Caller thank you for the opportunity. Ill try to be quick. Two comments. One, i always admired eisenhower for having to pull in citizens from the town near the concentration camps so that they could witness what the nazis nazi regime did but thats not my question. My question is, studying world war ii is so impactful for studying where we are today from a political, military, and social perspective. You can comment on that particularly as it relates to the politics involved in making both the atomic and Hydrogen Bombs post world war. Thank you for the opportunity and i look forward to hearing your comments. Guest thanks for the call, lawrence. Yeah, the consequences of world war ii are extraordinary socially
