Carla hayden, im honored to say that im the 14th library of congress. As you can see, im pretty excited to open this event. Our 17th consecutive celebration of books and reading. Its wonderful to see if house and our largest presentations space. Not only will have a full house here at the convention center, but we have millions of people joining us live on facebook. Thomas freedom barely needs an introduction he is an internationally recognized writer on the Foreign Affairs and the environment. In Michael Lewis is famous for his books about finance such as liars poker but he is equally famous for his books about topics as diverse as adoption and baseball. The screen adaptations of the blindside in moneyball among others had been enormously popular. In condoleezzas rice was the secretary of state for the united states. And she is now on the faculty of Stanford University traveling from california to be here with us today. And finally mr. David baldacci. Perfect example of how victorians lived. He had been a judge jurisprudence your court judge for over 25 years and he grew up in the home from the time he was 4 years old until he died in 2003. Even though he was born in oregon in 1914, his father was a chemical engineer that met his mother here in redding, she was Teaching School there and they married in the parlor of this home. We have her his mothers wedding gown and they they moved to oregon where the judges father had relatives and lived until during world war i, his father was a chemical engineer serving in a Chemical Warfare plant in ohio and he died in the flu pendemic and at the time the judge came with his mother, his grandfather had passed away. He lived with his grandmother, mother and aunt ella and those three ladies just spoiled him. But this home was purchased by his grandfather, built in 1895, victorian home and his grandfather purchased it in 1899 after he won the sheriff election and found that he had to move his fami

Book came. And then later on, i became a fish and game warden myself. And then i continued writing stories about my generation of fish and wildlife so the book is called the game wardens son. Being with my dad during those years when he was a game warden was like having a storybook childhood. I did things that most kids would dream of. When he started out, he was on what they call marine patrol and his duty was patrolling the channel the California Channel Islands which are fantastic. And theyre anywhere from like 26 miles across the sea like the song says or clear out way out in the ocean. So i got to go on these excursions or these patrols out into the out into the Channel Islands and see see things that mofmente kids would only dream of. There was one particular chapter i wrote about in the book. I called it a trip to the islands where we went out and we took these two National Park scientists from washington, d. C. Out to Santa Barbara island and an at that barbara island had been
