All roads led to Delhi for a long march of tractor trolleys moving bumper to bumper from various directions in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan on Sunday, lending momentum to the planned Republic Day farmers’ rally in the national capital in more ways than one. On stretches of the NH-44 between Haryana’s Ambala and Sonipat, there were tractors as far as the eye could travel.
Songs of protest sung by popular Punjab singers blared from speakers as flags of farmers’ unions fluttered atop tractors headed for the Singhu-Kundli and Tikri borders. Unlike November 26 and 27, when Haryana police had put up barricades at various locations to stop the surge of farmers proceeding towards Delhi. On Sunday, the police’s role was restricted to regulating traffic at bottlenecks created by convoys of tractors.

New Delhi:
Farmers protesting the central government s new agricultural laws said on Saturday that they will hold a 100-km tractor rally in the national capital on Republic Day after getting a go-ahead from the Delhi Police that set aside the initial resistance from authorities for the demonstration. The police, however, appeared to contradict the claim soon after.
The routes, he said, will be announced later.
The breakthrough came after Delhi Police have agreed to remove their barricades from Singhu and Tikri borders to allow the rally to enter Delhi, the leader said.
Police intelligence reports estimated 70,000 to 1 lakh tractors to be part of the farmers rally, the leader said.
“They said that it may take 48 hours to complete the march and asked us to reconsider the route as it may sabotage the official Republic Day parade,” Singhwala said.
Delhi Police and farmers had been stuck in an impasse over routes for the past few days. Farmers had previously announced that they were holding the parade in the Outer Ring Road, causing Delhi Police to worry about the impact it would have on the central government’s Republic Day Parade.
