The Jharkhand High Court last week quashed criminal proceedings against Chief Minister Hemant Soren accused of violating Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
A Sessions Court in Uttar Pradesh's Rampur, on Thursday, refused to stay the conviction of Samajwadi Party Leader Azam Khan in a hate speech case against him which had led to his disqualification from UP State Assembly.
The petition filed by NGO Lok Prahari also challenged the period of disqualification provided under Sections 8 and 9 of the Representation of the People Act.
The case against Khan was registered after he allegedly made provocative remarks against UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and IAS Aunjaneya Kumar Singh.
The development has come in the backdrop of the poll panel recently delisting 284 defaulting and non-compliant registered unrecognised political parties (RUPPs), declaring more than 253 of them inactive.
