The prize, worth $1,500, was granted by an international non-profit organisation, Electronic Information for Libraries on Wednesday. Joburg libraries were recognised for their contribution to providing remote digital library services during the lockdown. The series featured reading development, the use of cellphone applications at home as well as access to online content for e-learning and for personal development.

However, librarians were worried about the people who would be excluded from the library during lockdown as they did not have access to computers and the internet. They needed a non-face-to-face, non-virtual solution and came up with the idea of a telephone reading service, which they called Aló BNP (Hello, BNP).
