The move towards transparency of budget figures is arguably one of the most significant achievements of this year’s budget. By acknowledging that fiscal deficit in revised estimates (RE) 2020-21 will be 9.5% of GDP rather than 3.5% in the budget estimates (BE), the Centre has brought much needed credibility to the figures of fiscal deficit. If the deficit can be contained to 6.8% in 2021-22, the Centre can claim even more credit for the robustness of the budget’s estimates and projections.

In a pre-budget and post-budget analysis, farmers’ leaders Yogendra Yadav, Avik Saha, Kavita Kuruganthi, Kiran Vissa and other agricultural experts said that the Union budget presented on Monday “has proved the farmers’ apprehensions right – that this government is on a path of withdrawing support to agriculture, not strengthening it.”
