MIDDLETOWN - Firefighters rescued numerous animals after a Crystal Court home caught fire Wednesday morning, according to the township fire department.
Fire crews initially pulled a hamster, three dogs, four cats and 20 rabbits from the burned out home, said Dennis Fowler, a Middletown Township Fire Department spokesman. A few of the animals later died from smoke inhalation, he said.
All human occupants had safely escaped the home prior to firefighters arrival, Fowler said.
The blaze broke out about 10 a.m. when a neighbor spotted flames and smoke at 16 Crystal Court and called authorities.
Middletown First Assistant Fire Chief John Waltz arrived to find flames pouring out of the second-floor and back porch of the two-story home, Fowler said.
