Parties boycott NA-249 recount over non-provision of Form 46
Say ballot counterfoil also not checked; no precedent of recount without counting of empty ballots
KARACHI:
All parties, except the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and independent candidates seeking a recounting in the NA-249 constituency boycotted the process on Wednesday over non-provision of Form 46 and counterfoil of ballot papers not being checked.
In a letter addressed to the returning officer (RO), the parties maintained that, For want of non-provision of Form 46 and denial to allow access to the counterfoil of ballot paper, we cannot participate in [the] subject proceedings.
The signatories to the letter included the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP), Pasban and others.

The Election Commission of Pakistan is to begin recounting the votes for the hotly contested seat of the National Assembly seat from Karachi’s NA-249 constituency seat today (Thursday) but no matter which way the decision swings, the recently held by-poll is likely to remain controversial. Neither the Pakistan Peoples Party nor the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, which ostensibly bagged the highest and second highest number of votes, respectively, are willing to accept the other’s mandate on the seat.
