Reporter tonight the number of new cases reported in the south bay was 122, the largest singleday jump since the pandemic began, an increase the county Health Officer feared but anticipated as she told supervisors in a phone cull today. Recently were seeing worrisome signs that this increase may be accelerating. Reporter dr. Sara cody says the rise is likely due to three things. More is reopening. More people are going outside. Reporter and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department released a statement showing signs of heroism but some details are quite saddening. Deputy Carlos Francis was a standout Football Player in 2005. On friday he died trying to save the life of his sisters friend. They were on paddle boards. His sister and her friend were on kayaks. Her friend tried to help and when deputy stepped in to help but didnt make it to them in time and fell unconscious. Everyone in his party survived. He is being hailed a hero for putting his life on the line to save another. Deputy francis was with the Sheriffs Office since december of 2011. Devastating. It happened in an instant. This man camping with his own family when awakeen just after 4 this morning by tremendous sound. I heard a loud crash. And obviously it was a tremendous that came down and crushed 2 people in a tent. And heard a lot of screaming and wasnt quite sure what was going on. Large limb from black oak had fallen on a tent at the popular Upper Pines Campground at yosemite. Park ranger rush to the scene but too late. Unfortunately there were 2 young people in the tent minor under 18. Tree branch fell and struck them and unfortunately they died. The campground is packed with tourist from all over the world this time of year. Many of them making reservation year in advance. Upper pines is the especially popular with family because of the Majestic View of half dome. The people for all intents and purposes did nothing wrong. They were in established camp site. Park officials didnt close the campground. Investigation is under way to determine exactly why the tr
