The biggest singleday spike since the pandemic started. Take a look. Santa clara county reporting 122 new cases in a 24hour period. Hospitalizations are also spiking, and Health Officers are concerned. Nbc bay areas ian cull has the new details. Reporter tonight the number of new cases reported in the south bay was 122, the largest singleday jump since the pandemic began, an increase the county Health Officer feared but anticipated as she told supervisors in a phone cull today. Recently were seeing worrisome signs that this increase may be accelerating. Reporter dr. Sara cody says the rise is likely due to three things. More is reopening. More people are going outside. And theres an increase in testing. The county is trying to perform around 4,000 tests daily, helped by the sap testing site opening today from 1 00 to 7 00 threw friday. But dr. Cody points out a disproportionate number of new cases are occurring in East San Jose and south Santa Clara County, and nearly half of new cases are presumed to be from the virus unknowingly spread through the community. She says covid19 is like a wildfire. Once covid transmission begins to accelerate, it is very, very difficult to contain and to slow down. Reporter hospitalizations are up slightly in the south bay as well at 61. Doctors are monitoring that and testing positivity rates to track the spread. But in Southern California and in california in general, were seeing an increase in the tests positivity rate, which suggests that its beyond amount of testing. And were seeing an increase in the number of hospitalizations, about 15 above where we were last week. Reporter its been nearly three weeks since Santa Clara County opened indoor retail and outdoor dining. On friday, Health Officials can start assessing the data to see if more will reopen or not. In san jose, ian cull, nbc bay area news. Not just the bay area, cases are rising statewide. Yesterday alone, more than 5,000 people tested positive. 65 people died. On a National Level, dr. Anthony fauci testified before congress today. He addressed comments made by president trump, who said that he told his people to slow covid testing because its leading to more reported cases. I know for sure that to my knowledge, none of us have ever been told to slow down on testing. Were going to be doing more testing, not less. Dr. Fauci also stressed the importance that all americans should be Wearing Masks. You may have to scratch europe off your Summer Vacation list. The eu is reportedly planning to reopen its borders july 1st except to a handful of countries, including the u. S. According to the new york times, the eu points to the trump administrations poor handling of this pandemic. Brazil and russia are also on the list to be banned from traveling into europe. Eu leaders consider all three countries unsafe. Well, several Bay Area School districts are considering cutting ties with their Campus Police force. Tomorrow the Oakland Unified School board will vote on a measure that would eliminate the districts Campus Police department. It would allow that money to be redirected to other school services. In san francisco, the board of education is having a similar debate. Before that district can make any decisions, it needs to first change its current agreement with sfpd. And thats an issue moving forward. School districts and politicians can vote to Reform Police. However, it will require more than legislation. There is some legal maneuvering here what it comes to sealed records for police officers. Heres nbc bay areas jean elle. Reporter people across the country are in the streets demanding Police Reform. U. S. Senators are debating the republicans justice act, addressing choke holds. In san francisco, the chief says Police Departments need to make changes. In my opinion, transparency is key to the road to accountability. Reporter there is a lot of work to do. In this Months Police Officers Association newsletter, a reminder about sealing 2yearold written reprimands and 5yearold suspensions in an officers personnel file so they cant be used against officers who pursue promotions, transfers, or special assignments. I understand the optics are horrible, especially in light of all thats going on on the National Level right now. Reporter the poa president says its offenses like missing court, a dui, or a suspended license. Sealing the records means officers can advance in their careers. But with a new city contract on the table next year, he expects transparency to be on the table. What would alarm me is if people arent open to even thinking about, well, maybe its time to change the rules. But Police Commissioner John Hamasaki says its time to talk about having a complete picture of an officers history in their personnel file. Students in walnut creek are calling for change, addressing racism and sexism on campus. Tonight lasz they wanted to share their experiences are racism and sexism. Current and former students were on hand. They called on the administration to do more to support all las lomas students. We have changes in Mountain View. Tonight city leaders proclaimed black lives matter. The city Council Adopted a resolution. Its part of a new path forward in addressing racial inequalities. The council is also creating a subcommittee on race, equity, and inclusion. In the past few weeks, Mountain View also banned the use of those police choke holds and signed president obamas pledge to review and Reform Police use of force policies. Racism is now considered a Public Health crisis in Santa Clara County. Today the board of supervisors formally voted to make the change. They also passed a resolution declaring that black lives matter. This is an Excellent First start. I say its more than just a Public Health crisis. Last halloween, five people were killed when gunfire broke out at a rented home. To this date, no one has been charged in that case. Tonight were Digging Deeper into a new report that shows there are two Silicon Valleys. While Tech Companies are booming, a study by a san jose state professor shows minorities are being shut out, and the problem may be rooted in education. The study found the inability for many minority groups to thrive in the tech world may begin with inequities they experienced as kids in school. Called the Silicon Valley pain index, a new study found that only 1 of 19 billion in Venture Capital funding in Silicon Valley went to black startup tech firms. And thats far from the only troubling stat. Zero. Number of black women employed by ten large Silicon Valley technology companies. Reporter the study by san jose state sociology professor Scott Meyers Lipton found the disparities are systemic and start with a lack of equality in education. He found hispanics and blacks in Silicon Valley experience much higher High School Dropout rates than their white counterparts, and thats not all. In math proficiency, 67 of black kids and 75 of latino kids are not proficient in math compared to 31 for white kid whos are not proficient in math. Reporter reverend jethro moore with the naacp says the Digital Divide is very real. In some schools, everyone has a laptop and computer, some of them because their parents have it. In the lower east side, there are places that people cannot afford computers or technology. The technology is not up to date. Reporter he would like to see high Tech Companies invest more in minority kids, helping them to get internships and eventually hiring them. Dr. Meyerslipton says he plans to issue the Silicon Valley pain index every year to hold schools and businesses accountable for changing a broken system. You have a system based in White Supremacy and inequality. What is truly stunning is that in every institution examined, whites have the advantage over people of color. Reporter in san jose, Marianne Favro, nbc bay area news. That report also explores inequality when it comes to criminal justice. Out of every 1,000 black people arrested, 74 are minors. For every 1,000 latinos arrested, 40 are youths. For every 1,000 white people arrested, only 10 are minors. The report also looked at the number of households that do not have enough money to meet their basic needs. That means they rely on federal or local support. 57 of latino households are not selfsufficient. 46 of black households. 18 of white households. Sunrise middle school in downtown san jose welcomed back about 60 students for Summer School. You can see the kids spaced out there. They actually lined up single file, six feet apart before they got to school. They all wore masks, got their temperatures checked, and were required to wash their hands regularly. The principal decided Summer School would give them a good chance to see if they could effectively set up all the safety guidelines. The kids are starting to loosen up a little bit, getting used to Wearing Masks all day. I think theyre happy to see their friends again. The classrooms are very small, only 12 students in each class. The real challenge, though, comes in a couple of months as school plans to welcome back approximately 270 students. Well, a couple of weeks after reopening, campgrounds at yosemite are once again closing because of a spike in covid19 cases. The National Park began phased reopening two weeks ago by making six primary campgrounds available to tourists. Now all but two are being shut down. You can see that hot area of High Pressure pulling in the heat from the south. Theres also a system offshore and thats helping to funnel in some humidity as well. So hot and a little bit humid. As we move through tomorrow mornings forecast, sunshine away from the coast and temperatures in the 60s. 66 in the south bay. Peninsula 63. The trivalley at 68. Over to san francisco, thats going to be the best chance for that fog. Also some patchy low clouds in the north bay and 62. Lets give you this topdown view tomorrow morning. If you have plans to get up early and going, theres the low clouds over the north bay, also through san francisco, berkeley, and oakland. Then the sunniest start towards the south bay. As we head through the afternoon, we get that sunshine returning even at the coastline we could have a window there of some sun.
