always say who came in second because bob always won. and that sort of thing. so him going around the world in a boat was not a challenge to him because he was an excellent sailor and knew where he was all the time. we had no problems with him doing that. and he s a very nice guy. he s a retired veterinarian. phyllis is a wonderful lady. she s very happy, very bright all the time, very attractive. and we liked them both very much. they were our family. everybody in our yacht club is family. and when this happens to two of our family members, it s difficult. especially after what must have been such an exciting embarkation on an adventure. what s been the reaction there among your community? it was great sadness, great shock. we don t really have the words to express the feelings we have. our captain sent out a message

four americans murdered by somalian pirates during a global yachting expedition are remembered today as brave spirited adventurers who knew and embraced the dangers of the sea. hank hersey is a member of the seattle yacht club where he met and got to know two of the victims phyllis macay and bob riggle. good to see you today, hank. thank you for having me on. i m so sorry for your loss and i know it s a loss for everyone who knew phyllis and bob. give me a sense of what they were prepared for in terms of unexpected challenges. what did they know about piracy on the high seas? i only spoke with phyllis and bob briefly before they left. they left about six months ago or so. and they knew that they were going to go around the world in a smaller boat and there certainly would be challenges. but the challenge that they thought would be mostly from the sea itself and which they could manage. and they were joyful going to
