SEIRPC receives grant for Mt Pleasant project

Mount Pleasant, IA- The Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission has received a grant of just under half a million dollars to improve public transport. The Iowa Department of Transportation announced the Grant Tuesday, July 12th, as a way to support public transit projects. The Pen City Current reports that the $480,000 grant will be used to make improvements to the SEIBUS facility in Mount Pleasant. The grant was one of four given out by the Iowa DOT. Other cities that received grants included Sioux City, Ames, and Mason City.

One person injured in Lee County crash

Lee County, IA- One person was injured following a vehicle rollover as a result of a high-speed pursuit into Lee County. The Pen City Current reports that the vehicle was going southbound on Highway 218 out of Henry County to Lee County. Lee County deputies deployed stop sticks just north of 190th street. The suspect's vehicle lost control at the sticks and rolled over the median before coming to rest in the northbound lane. The driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, was injured and taken to Henry County Health Center for treatment.

One person hospitalized in Lee County crash

Lee County, IA- One person was injured and airlifted from the scene of a Lee County accident. The Pen City Current reports that, on Thursday, June 2nd, just before 1 PM the Lee Comm Communications Center received a report of a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of 130th Street and Pilot Grove Road. Lee County Deputies, along with Lee County EMS, Iowa DOT officers, and St. Paul Volunteer Fire responded. A 2018 Chevy Silverado was traveling eastbound on 130th street and had collided with a tractor-trailer that had failed to yield at the intersection. One person was airlifted from the scene with serious injuries. The accident remains under investigation.

Music festival to benefit Ukraine scheduled for Sunday

Lee County, IA- The Lee County Fairgrounds will be hosting a party on Sunday, all to benefit Ukraine. Event organizer David Roth told the Pen City Current that watching all the events of the war in Ukraine, as well as social media posts from a friend in Ukraine made him want to get involved. Thus he started organizing an event called "To Ukraine From Iowa With Love." The event will take place at the Lee County Fairgrounds from 1 to 7 PM Sunday, June 5th. Residents are invited to come and enjoy local music acts, food, and beverages with all donations going to benefit Ukrainian refugees. Admission to the event is free, but free-will donations are being accepted.

P A W animal shelter hopes to break ground on new shelter this summer

Fort Madison, IA- An anonymous benefactor has put a new animal shelter in Fort Madison back on track. President of the PAW animal shelter Brad Walker told the Pen City Current that, thanks to the anonymous donation, construction of the new shelter will begin sometime this summer. Walker said that, while the total $5 million has yet to be raised for the project, they have raised enough to start construction.
