Lee County, IA- A New London woman has died following a single-vehicle accident Friday, April 15th. The Pen City Current reports that Lee County Sheriff's deputies responded to a single-vehicle accident near highway 2 and West Point road at 5:11 PM Friday. Upon arrival, deputies found a vehicle stuck inside a fence in a field with an unresponsive female, later identified as Luan Carol Schmitt of New London, in the driver's seat. After further investigation, it was determined that Schmitt was traveling westbound on Highway 2, lost control of her vehicle, and entered the north ditch before coming to rest in the fence. Schmitt was taken to Great River Health in Fort Madison, where she died from her injuries. The accident is still under investigation.
Fort Madison, IA- The Fort Madison Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominees for their annual Salute to Small Business Breakfast. The Pen City Current reports that the chamber is seeking nominees for Small Business of the year, and Micro Business of the Year. The chamber will also once again be presenting an award for Innovator of the year. All awards will be presented at the annual breakfast on May 5th. Fort Madison, IA- A district judge has turned ownership of the downtown Humphrey building over to the city of Fort Madison. The Pen City Current reports that District 8B Judge John Wright ruled to give ownership of the building, located at 732 Avenue G in downtown Fort Madison over to the city at a hearing on Friday, March 4th. Fort Madison Mayor Matt Mohrfeld says the city will plan to finish environmental studies of the building which are currently underway. The city is also working with a developer to repurpose the building. Courts ruled that the building be vacated due to dangerous conditions last summer.
Fort Madison, IA- The annual Fort Madison Paint-A-Thon is scheduled to begin in April. The Pen City Current reports that prepping and painting of homes will begin on April 22nd. The Fort Madison Partners are looking for volunteers to participate in the event. Volunteers must be over 16 years old and be available at some point from 9 AM to 5 PM throughout the week. Lee County, IA- A Donnellson man has been found guilty of two counts of homicide in the deaths of a Donnellson couple. The Pen City Current reports that 55-year-old Chad Ray Davis of Donnellson plead guilty to two counts of Homicide by Vehicle while Operating Under the Influence in the deaths of Michael and Linda Horn. Davis now awaits sentencing on the convictions for his part in the traffic accident on Highway 2 east of Donnellson in August of 2020. Davis was driving a pickup truck that struck the Horns from behind, who were on a motorcycle. Sentencing for Davis is set for April 15th.
