QUEENSTOWN AND ARROWTOWN
Celebrate the change of season in one of the country s prettiest destinations, with the Arrowtown Autumn Festival (April 22-26).
The festival has been a must-do in the region since 1985, when events included barbershop quartet competitions and sheep races. Though the calendar of events may have changed, many long-held traditions remain today, like the art exhibition at the Lakes District Museum, the street parade, and market day. It s certainly a lively way to spend your time in the south.

Trial aims to prevent runaway mussel floats

A Tasman-based company has begun a one-year research trial aimed at reducing the number of mussel floats that get lost at sea each year.
Aquaculture float specialist SS Floats has teamed up with the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) to devise an improved float and attachment method for longline mussel farming.
MPI is contributing $72,500 towards the $145,000 project through its Sustainable Food & Fibre Futures.
The new design must be able to withstand the unpredictability of open waters better than the existing floats, lead designer for SS Floats Paul Smith said.
A tricky site and good design come together in Christchurch.

If so, his family home nestled into the hill above Sumner Beach in Christchurch is indeed a clever house. It has picked up a fistful of awards and catered masterfully to the needs of its inhabitants: Regan and his wife, Melanie Lynn, their 15-month-old daughter, Harper, and Apple, an elderly beagle.

A $3 million flood resilience project is under way to protect a popular fishing spot and significant wetlands near Kaiapoi (McIntoshâs bend). However, while the flood zones have encroached markedly on residential developments, the likelihood of being flooded is slim, the modelling based on a 2500-year “worst case” tsunami. The red evacuation zone, nearest the sea, has only seen minor changes, but would be the most likely to be affected by a tsunami. It covers estuaries, beaches and rivers which can experience strong currents and surges in the water from tsunamis of any size. An orange evacuation zone covers land that could be flooded during large tsunamis, and already included the coastal settlements at The Pines Beach, Kairaki, Woodend Beach and Waikuku Beach.
